Discuss the main causes and effects of gun crime in the USA - Essay Example Given that it is a constitutional right to protect one’s self from harm and attacks, many citizens take advantage of these factors to assault others (Boseley, 2013). In this case, many criminals use guns in their activities, knowing the constitutional frameworks are in place to protect them against receiving serious jail terms because of the atrocities they perform. In addition to the need for self-defense, the large number of civilian gun holders in the country also explains the reason why many gun crimes exist in the U.S. The notion according to the creators of this act was that more guns available in the country would translate into less numbers or incidents of crime in that country. Private gun holders often use their emotional distress to carry out crimes, hence questioning the necessity of private gun holders in the presence of a tight police service. The current gun control laws in the United States make it easier for people to acquire, own, and carry firearms (Spano & Bolland, 2010). These laws specify the role of the firearm as to protect the holder. However, this exposes the citizens who do not have firearms, as they are subject to constant threat and manipulation from their partners who have licenses to hold guns. In addition to this, the gun related cases are handled at the state courts, which have softer penalties for the perpetrators of gun violence. Such penalties do not stifle the act of crime using guns, instead instigating criminals to use guns more in their operations. The existence of drug lords and drug cartels in the United States leads to the rise in various vicious gangs that sell or traffic drugs across the borders. The increased intake of drugs in the USA indicates more business for the drug cartels, which often compete to attract more customers (Gius, 2014).
