As Gabriel said, A few monthsearlier Boldwoods forgetting his husbandry would have been aspreposterous as a sailor forgetting he was in a ship. Boldwoodforgetting his hay ricks was a huge clue to how much Bathshebasmarriage had affected him. At the stop over of the story, he tried to takehis own life and was only halt by his worker Sam. Compared to thedignified and respected Boldwood we saw at the start of the novel,this is a drastic change.Similarly, Troyshirks his responsibilities and drags the rest of t heworkers down with him as well by practically forcing them to drink. Hetells them that If any of the men show the white feather, permit themlook else where for a winters work. By saying this, the men had beenleft with no choice but to do what he told them to. He shows contempttowards Gabriels breath that the hay ricks should be covered inorder to protect them from the rain. In the end Gabriel had to do itall by himself as the workers had been too intoxicated to work. He saw atonce that if the ricks were to be saved that night, or even the nestmorning, he would have to save them with his own hands. The reasonhas shown a contrast in the attitudes if Frank Troy and Gabriel Oak.Clearly, Troydid the workers harm more than good. Therefore, theirworking relationship with the workers show their worth or lack ofworth. Also, the seed makes it clear that the workers are not toblame in this matter as they had been suitably apologetic andembarrassed the day after. the others shambled afte r with amoral sense stricken air.Move plot along.At many points of the story, the major characters adjust out many thingsthat have affected the way the story has been compete out from theminor characters.
